CREDIT: HBO Game Of Thrones will be coming to the big screen, as a new film has been announced. READ MORE: Here’s what we know about ‘House Of The Dragon’ season three Based on the books by George R. R. Martin, the original Game Of Thrones series followed the fierce battle for the fantasy continent of Westeros, with numerous families scheming against each other. The show ran for eight seasons between 2011 and 2019, and became a cultural phenomenon. Advertisement Since the show’s end, two spin-off series have been released – House Of The Dragon, set 200 years before Game Of Thrones; and A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, set between the two other shows. A stage play based on the series was also recently announced, and now a movie will expand the universe further. According to Variety, the film is being developed by Beau Willimon, who was writer and showrunner of Netflix hit House Of Cards, as well as a writer on the Star Wars series Andor. Little is known about the project, although the outlet reports it will be about Aegon I, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his conquest of Westeros. The story will be set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. The movie’s future may already be in jeopardy, however, given the recent acquisition of studio Warner Bros (owners of the Game Of Thrones franchise) by Paramount Skydance. Should the merger be approved by the US government, the company could feasibly scrap all projects in development. However, the popularity of the franchise means that the new owners may be keen to capitalise on its success. In the short-term, a third season of House Of The Dragon is on the horizon, with a trailer having been recently released ahead of its June release date. Elsewhere, original Game Of Thrones star Sophie Turner recently revealed she wouldn’t be watching A Knight Of The Kingdoms, or any Game Of Thrones follow up, as even the show’s theme tune gives her “crazy anxiety”.
