READ MORE: The “miracle” of ‘God Of War’s music – 20 years since the first game During Sony’s recent State Of Play presentation, it was announced the first three God Of War games are currently being remade. “As we approach the final month of God Of War’s 20th anniversary year in March 2026, we couldn’t let this milestone close without giving fans one last big surprise! This project is still very early in development, so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared. When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one,” explained Sony in a blog post. Advertisement That announcement was followed up by the news that a new side-scrolling prequel game Sons Of Sparta was available right away. “Sons Of Sparta is a canon story that takes place in Kratos’ youth from the writing team that brought you God Of War (2018), God Of War Ragnarök, and God Of War Ragnarök: Valhalla. Set during the brutal training period Spartan cadets undergo at the Agoge – Kratos, alongside his brother Deimos, must traverse far beyond the home they know into the beautiful yet dangerous region of Laconia that surrounds the familiar walls of Sparta.” The game sees the return of TC Carson as the voice of adult Kratos while Jack Quaid voices his “good-natured” ally Eis. “As a long time video game nerd, this is truly a dream come true. Have fun playing,” he wrote on Instagram. However one person who isn’t impressed by Sons Of Sparta is original God Of War creator David Jaffe. “I don’t like it. I don’t recommend it. What the fuck were they thinking,” he asked at the start of a nine-minute review. “It’s not a bad game by any means, it’s fine. I could go into the specifics of the game but the most fascinating part of this for me is ‘why is this in existence?’ The voice acting isn’t very good, and the story… maybe it gets really good [but] this is not God Of War.” Recommended He went on to criticise the decision to turn Kratos into a “generic, boring little kid” for the origin story. “It makes no sense [and] it’s a dumb idea.” “The gameplay is serviceable. I didn’t enjoy it too much,” he continues, admitting that he only managed to play an hour of Sons Of Sparta. “The only thing offensive about it is its genericism and its inability to respect the license. It’s insulting. It’s like [making] a John Wick film about him sitting in a coffee shop and talking. It really makes me angry. Sons Of Sparta is dumb, it’s crap, avoid this.” Other fans are annoyed that the two-player co-op mode is only unlocked after completing Sons Of Sparta’s single-player campaign mode. Advertisement In other news, a live-action adaptation of God Of War is currently in the works at Amazon Prime Video with Ryan Hurst, who played Thor in the God Of War reboot games, taking on the role of Kratos. He’ll be joined by Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Thor), Teresa Palmer (Sif), Max Parker (Heimdall) and Mandy Patinkin (Odin).
