The World of ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ Will Expand in a Big Way

Author Sarah J. Maas announces the next two books in her best-selling fantasy series—and teases the future of its screen adaptation. Romantasy is ridiculously popular right now—not for nothing did Pluribus make its main character, Carol Sturka, a famous writer in the genre—and a lot of that has to do with Sarah J. Maas. While her Throne of Glass and Crescent City series have both been successful, it’s A Court of Thorns and Roses that has made Maas a household name. And now we know when the next book is coming… or rather, the next two books. The most recent entry in the series, A Court of Silver Flames, released back in 2021—but Maas fans got the third Crescent City book, House of Flame and Shadow, in 2024. So the scarcity isn’t exactly at George R.R. Martin levels for readers here. But a return to her best-known series is coming October 27, when the still-untitled A Court of Thorns and Roses 6 gets a worldwide release. A press release from publisher Bloomsbury, which notes Maas has sold more than 75 million books and has been published in 40 languages, teases the book’s return “to the courts of Prythian… Romance, danger, and intrigue await you in the stunning new installment.” The details are even more vague for A Court of Thorns and Roses 7, which drops January 12, 2027, with the promise that “the magic continues in the next exciting installment.” Maas’ reach is especially wide because of her viral fame; not for nothing did she announce her new books on the Call Her Daddy podcast. Speaking to host Alex Cooper in an episode titled “The Wait Is Over,” Maas also offered an update on the ACOTAR adaptation, first announced back in 2021 but—two Hollywood strikes later—was officially declared dead at Hulu in February 2025. “I have the rights back to everything now,” Maas told Cooper (via the Wrap). “Getting the rights back to all my things has been a big part of my journey in recent years that maybe at some point soon I will talk more about, but right now my focus is on books, and it’s been a little while since you guys have had something, so I’m focusing on that.” She continued. “I look at any [adaptation] as kind of another facet of the worlds that I’ve created. And it’s something that I want to be in charge of, I want to be figuring out, I want to be learning everything that I can. I’m a type A control freak a little bit, but I want to know everything about how it gets made, not because of that control but just because I love movies. I love TV. I want to be a part of that, and I want to see everything adapted the way I envision it and the way I know fans want it.” With Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere universe coming to Apple TV in both series and movie form, the Eragon dragon tales getting a fresh adaptation at Disney+, and George R.R. Martin’s Westeros continuing to bear fruit for HBO, the timing feels promising for yet another fantasy book series to leap from page to screen.
