After Beijing announced it would reopen its borders next month, the Chinese are scrambling to book trips abroad.
According to the Immigration Department, passport applications for Chinese citizens wishing to travel abroad will resume from January 8.
It follows Monday’s announcement that ended nearly three years of strict quarantine rules for arrivals.
Since then, travel sites have reported an increase in traffic.
However, not all countries are freely accessible for Chinese tourists.
US officials are considering new restrictions on travelers from China due to concerns about a spike in cases and a lack of transparency from the Chinese government.
“There is growing concern in the international community about the sudden increase in COVID-19 in China and the lack of transparent data, including data on the genome sequence of the virus,” US officials said in a statement cited by the news agency. news.
“Without this data, it becomes increasingly difficult for public health officials to identify potential new subspecies and take prompt action to reduce their spread.”
Japan, one of the most popular destinations for Chinese travelers, has announced that all travelers from China must show a negative Covid test upon arrival or be quarantined for seven days.
India has also said that travelers from China (and some other countries) must show a negative Covid test on arrival, but this is expected before Beijing eases restrictions, it announced.
The easing of travel rules in China is the final part of the country’s zero-coronavirus policy and comes as the country battles a new wave of infections.
Outrage over government policies that sparked a rare public protest against President Xi Jinping in November has led to the loosening of Covid restrictions across the country.
But there have been reports of covid cases on the rise, hospitals overwhelmed and medicines running low.
Tuesday’s outbound travel announcement came on the heels of Monday’s news of the lifting of quarantine rules for travelers arriving in China. We have also removed the daily flight limit.
On the same day, the National Health Commission announced that Covid will be officially downgraded to a Class B infectious disease on January 8.
Before travel restrictions were relaxed, people were strongly discouraged from traveling abroad. The sale of outbound group tours and package tours has been banned, according to marketing solutions firm Dragon Trail International.
Within 30 minutes of the Monday announcement that China’s borders would be reopened, data from travel site Trip.com (cited by Chinese media) showed a 10-fold year-on-year increase in searches for popular destinations.
Macao, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand and South Korea were the most popular destinations.
In addition, Chinese travel agency Qunar saw a seven-fold increase in flight inquiries on its website within the first 15 minutes of the announcement, China Daily reports.
According to Statista, there were 155 million outbound tourists from China in 2019 before the pandemic. This number will drop to 20 million by 2020.
This year, some people in China want to visit family and loved ones during the Chinese New Year, which begins on January 22.
However, there were mixed reactions within China.
“I’m happy about it, but I’m at a loss for words. If I’m doing this anyway, why did I have to undergo daily Covid tests and lockdowns this year?” said resident Rachel Liu.
She endured a three-month lockdown in April, but nearly everyone in her family has been infected in recent weeks.
She said her parents, grandparents and her partner, who live in three different cities, Xi’an, Shanghai and Hangzhou, had a fever last week.
As covid cases peaked, many raised concerns online about the borders reopening.
“Why can’t we wait for this wave to pass? Health workers are already exhausted and the elderly can’t survive two infections in one month,” read Weibo’s top rated comment.
People in cities with low winter temperatures, such as Beijing and Shanghai, say they are running low on cold and flu medicine.
There is concern that hundreds of deaths are going unreported due to overflowing crematoria.
In the capital, Beijing, authorities say they plan to distribute Paxlovid, a Pfizer pill, to try to reduce the severity of the infection. However, the health center contacted by the Global Times on Monday said the medicine had not yet been delivered.
On Monday, President Xi Jinping issued his first remarks on the changes, calling on officials to do what is “practical” to save lives.
China’s turnaround puts Xi in a difficult situation. He was a driving force behind covid zero which many blamed for making people’s lives too restricted and crippling the economy.
But having abandoned him, analysts say he now has to take responsibility for a huge wave of infections and hospitalizations. Many wonder why the country wasn’t better prepared.
China resumes international travel: Which countries are introducing new COVID restrictions?
Countries are introducing new COVID-19 measures for travelers arriving from China as international travel resumes.
So far Japan, India, Italy, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan and the US have announced stricter rules for travelers from China in response to rising cases.
Japan says a negative COVID-19 test will be required upon arrival from China, and those who test positive will have to spend a week in quarantine. Tokyo also plans to limit the number of airlines by increasing flights to China.
Malaysia has introduced additional monitoring and surveillance measures. The Philippines is also considering introducing tests.
On Friday, South Korea announced that it would introduce PCR tests on arrival for people arriving from China from January 2. Starting January 5, the country will additionally require a negative test result within 48 hours or a rapid antigen test performed within 24 hours prior to departure. There are also restrictions on short-term visas for Chinese citizens.
US government officials are also stepping up scrutiny, citing concerns about a “lack of transparent data” coming from Beijing. Starting January 5, all air passengers over the age of two must test negative no more than two days before departure from China, Hong Kong or Macao.
In the EU, Italy has ordered COVID-19 antigen samples and virus sequencing for all travelers arriving from China, the health minister said on Wednesday.
The Belgian mayor has also called for the reintroduction of COVID checks for tourists entering from China, while France says there is no need to step up border checks. A broad decision from the EU was expected on Thursday, but no deal has yet been reached.
On Friday, Spain became the second European country to announce COVID restrictions for travelers from China, who will now need to provide a negative test result or proof of vaccination.
The UK, however, has no plans to bring back COVID-19 tests for those arriving in the country, a government spokesman said on Thursday. Australia is also not making any changes to its rules regarding the admission of travelers from China to the country.
Why are countries concerned about travelers arriving from China?
In recent weeks, China has been quick to relax its strict COVID rules amid public unrest. The drastic change in policy has reportedly overwhelmed the healthcare system as the virus spreads almost unchecked.

China, a country of 1.4 billion people, reported three new COVID deaths on Tuesday, compared with one on Monday. However, these numbers are not consistent with what funeral homes are reporting, as well as the experience of much less populated countries after they reopened.
“The international community is increasingly concerned about the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19 in China and the lack of transparent data, including virus genomic sequencing data, coming from the People’s Republic of China [PRC],” US officials said. on Tuesday.
In Italy, Milan’s main airport, Malpensa, already began testing passengers arriving from Beijing and Shanghai on December 26, and the results show that almost one in two passengers has been infected.
What are the rules for people traveling to China?
On Monday, China said it would lift quarantine requirements for incoming travelers from January 8. The issuance of visas for residents of the country to travel abroad will also be resumed.
This is an important step to ease restrictions at its borders, which have been largely closed since 2020. In recent weeks, the rules have been gradually relaxed to make it easier for both domestic and international travel.
Hong Kong also said on Wednesday that it would lift most of the remaining COVID restrictions.
On Tuesday, online searches for flights from China rose sharply from an extremely low level, but residents and travel agencies suggested it would take several more months to return to normal as caution prevails for now.

You’re probably thinking that you know everything there is to know about the Rooftop Concert Series You’re saying to yourself, it started in 1986 and was on for 9 seasons and starred Andy Griffith.
Just because you can do something, should you? Samsung thinks so. Its second experimentally screened phone taps into its hardware R&D and production clout to offer something not many other companies.
WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM THIS CONCERT?
The Rooftop Concert Series began in 2010 when four Provo residents (Sarah Wiley, C. Jane Kendrick, Mindy Gledhill, and Justin Hackworth) met together to discuss ways they could get more people to come downtown.
Ccity has to offer one obvious starting point was the music that was being made played, and performed in Provo. How about concerts on the roof someone said and the Rooftop Concert Series was born.

And how does Apple’s biggest phone compare to the Note Edge? Well, both remain unwieldy to grip, and the Note Edge is wider. However, the edged screen nuzzles into my hand better and those software tweaks mentioned above give it the advantage. However, just like the stylus, there’s a while before you get the knack of all the little provisions Samsung’s made to ease users into this screen size.
Roland Miller has spent nearly half his life chronicling these landmarks before they are lost forever long been obsessed with space as a child, he dreamed of being an astronaut.
Its curves are subjective and divisive; my friends and colleagues have offered up reactions ranging from outright bemusement to adoration. The screen looks great, with the punchy contrast and sharpness that’s been a Samsung flagship mainstay for years. We’ll get back to that edge, but it’s the headline part of a 5.6-inch Quad-HD+ display.
Make this secondary menu transparent, allowing me to maintain all that screen space. The ability to shrink the likes of Chrome and Google Maps to a popup window and layer it on top of other apps is also useful I’d love to see something similar on the iPhone 6 Plus continues to clear away.
If you’re looking to learn more about the stylus uses, I’d advise a quick read of Brad’s Galaxy Note 4 review, because the setup is identical here. Yes, there are TouchWiz bits running on Android 4.4 KitKat.
But let’s focus on what’s different here: that edge. There are two display modes you can flit between: a slender, unassuming bar that can display a customized message and a more substantial column that attempts to offer extra functionality, notifications or context-dependent.

The screen is marginally smaller than the Note 4, despite the cranked-up pixel count. Like the Note 4, text pops a little more, and pictures you take with the 16MP camera are obviously better replicated on the Note Edge’s screen.
