Now, he’s revealed that their self-titled debut album will be released on April 10 via Rough Trade Records (available to pre-order here). Advertisement Ahead of its release, they’ve shared ‘Numerology’, a non-album single that will feature on a bonus 10″ version, as well as on a limited-edition Deluxe CD. Over a frenetic acoustic guitar, Picton ponders the chance and possibility that exists within “one night” The track swirls from dance to psychedelic as he embraces the thrill of fun and danger. The new album came to Picton as a fever dream while he was “delirious in a Chinese hotel room” and “battling through the worst of a sudden illness”, per a press release. While suffering, he was overcome with flashes of “weird imagery” and text, which he would later form into the songs that made up the LP. Recommended Picton takes on the role of bandleader as well as the “unreliable but charismatic narrator”, with musicians Kiran Leonard, Caius Williams, Steve Noble and Andrew Cheetham among those playing on the album. It’s almost entirely acoustic and uses “the barest amount of reverb and electronic effects possible”, as well as a full string section. They’ll kick things off in Glasgow on April 28 before heading to Leeds, Manchester, London, Bristol and Cambridge. The tour will wrap up in Oxford on May 5. The band formed in 2017 and were quickly met with acclaim for their brand of experimental art rock. In 2018, Shame declared the trio, comprised of Greep, Picton and Morgan Simpson the “best band in London”. Since then, they released three studio albums. Their 2019 debut ‘Schlagenheim’ was given four stars from NME, in a review that said they were “making music like no other band in the world.” It was followed by 2021’s ‘Cavalcade’ and ‘Hellfire’ in 2022. Elsewhere, in 2020, they released the jam and spoken word album ‘The Black Midi Anthology Vol. 1: Tales of Suspense and Revenge’, on Bandcamp. Black Midi’s last LP, 2022’s ‘Hellfire’, was given a four-star review by NME, which claimed that the project delivered “more musical thrills and about-turns per minute than few other records we’ve heard this year”.
