On Thursday (February 19), Dane, also known for Grey’s Anatomy, passed away after what his family described as “a courageous battle with ALS”. He had first shared his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis less than a year ago. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world,” the family’s statement added. Now, Dane’s friend Mike McGuiness has set up a crowdfunder campaign to help raise funds for his daughters, explaining that “Covid and ALS did a number on his work life and he sadly couldn’t leave his family with the resources he had hoped”. The GoFundMe aims to raise $250,000 (£185,000), with over $191,000 raised as of Saturday evening. See the campaign page here. When the news of Dane’s passing was announced, Levinson said: “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend. “Working with him was an honour. Being his friend was a gift.” Dane portrayed Cal Jacobs in HBO‘s Euphoria, and he also played Dr Mark Sloan, aka ‘Dr McSteamy’, on the US medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Following his ALS diagnosis, Dane spent recent months raising awareness of the most common form of motor neurone disease (MND). Late last year, he played a firefighter with ALS on the NBC medical series Brilliant Minds, marking his final role. Sydney Sweeney, who worked with Dane on Euphoria, reposted a clip of Eric leaving a message for his daughters with the message, “Forever will love you”, while former cast member Barbie Ferreira posted a clip of the actor with a white heart emoji via her Instagram Story. It’ll mark Dane’s third turn as Cal Jacobs, father to Jacob Elordi’s Nate Jacobs.
