Peter Krause to Star in NBC’s Drama ‘Protection’

Former 911 star Peter Krause has boarded Protection, a drama about a law enforcement family targeted by a killer. He’ll play Mike Thornhill, a former Secret Service agent who’s now an assistant director of intelligence. NBC has been on a casting run in the past week, also signing David Boreanaz (The Rockford Files), Damon Wayans Jr. (Puzzled) and Emily Deschanel (an untitled drama about a criminal profiler) to lead roles in pilots. There’s also an odd trend developing with NBC’s casting: All four drama leads, plus Jane Lynch in a comedy pilot, were series regulars on Fox shows in the 2010s. The drama comes from creator Josh Safran (Quantico, Gossip Girl) and Universal Television. The logline for Protection reads, “When a U.S. Marshal falls in the line of duty, a seemingly cut-and-dry case turns into a deadly conspiracy as a family of law enforcement agents become the target of a mysterious assassin. Bridging personal differences and crossing professional boundaries, the Thornhill family must use the expertise from a lifetime of protecting civilians and politicians to protect one another and bring the killer to justice … even if it means betraying their sworn code.” Krause’s Mike Thornhill is described a career blue-collar government worker who doesn’t want his job to end. He’s been the life of the party forever, and that attitude has come at a cost. Should it go to series, Protection will be Krause’s first TV role since he left 911 last season. The three-time Emmy nominee’s past work also includes Six Feet Under, NBC’s Parenthood, Dirty Sexy Money and Sports Night. Krause is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen. Safran is executive producing Protection with Jenna Bush Hager and Ben Spector.
