Organised by Geoff Wonfor, the event helps to raise funds for young creative talent across the North East of England. Advertisement Wonfor passed away in 2022, and this year’s event saw artists celebrate his life and his huge efforts to help the community. Held at the Utilita Arena on Sunday (February 15), The 1975’s frontman Matty Healy showed up for a surprise appearance, and looked back at his time performing at a previous edition of Sunday For Sammy. Adding that he “really missed” Wonfor, Healy broke out his 12-string acoustic guitar and played an emotive cover of James Taylor’s ‘Carolina On My Mind’, before inviting his 1975 bandmates John Waugh and Jamie Squire to the stage to break out a cover of The La’s ‘There She Goes’. The band have been largely inactive following their impressive headline set at Glastonbury 2025. While he didn’t reveal much about the follow-up to 2022’s ‘Being Funny In A Foreign Language’, he did suggest it could be a double album that might be called ‘DOGS’. The followed this up again at the end of the year, and said that the next two years “look mental” for The 1975. The band haven’t announced any live plans for 2026 yet but they will be releasing a 10th anniversary vinyl reissue of ‘I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it‘ later this month.
