Danone boss calls for higher taxes on unhealthy food

The CEO of Britain’s largest food company is calling for higher taxes on foods high in salt, fat and sugar.
James Mayer, who runs Danone in the UK and Republic of Ireland, said food producers were “not ready to change”.
The French company is best known for its yogurt brands, but it also owns the Evian and Volvic bottled water brands.
He said only 10% of Danone’s own products are affected by a tax called the “sin tax.”

But Meyer said the new approach should include not only restrictions on advertising, but also “consider how VAT rates can align with product health certifications.”

The Food and Beverage Federation (FDF), an industry group, said manufacturers are working to improve the “nutritional profile” of their products, including by offering different serving sizes. As a result, the average grocery basket contains 13% fewer calories, 15% less sugar and 24% less salt than in 2018, the FDF said.
“Businesses will continue to innovate, but this often takes time, requires significant investment and can be technically challenging for some foods,” an FDF spokesperson said.
The FDF said the additional tax would add to the “financial burden” of rising costs manufacturers already face and make the challenge even more difficult.
Meyer said Danone UK and Ireland has committed to keeping 90% of its products below the thresholds that are considered high in fat, salt and sugar and marketed to children in that category and vowed not to launch new products.
